Heroes in the Classroom

Rellie Lawyer, a special education and gifted teacher at Mary C. O’Brien School, recently received an Arizona Cardinals and University of Phoenix Heroes in the Classroom Award at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The award came with an Arizona Cardinals jersey, four tickets to a home game and four VIP sidelines passes.

School Principal Lisa Raymond said Lawyer teaches students with a variety of learning and behavioral needs. His demeanor is kind, patient, positive and supportive, and he uses multiple strategies, incorporating hands-on materials, visuals and opportunities for practice, to help students learn.
Gifted students identify curriculum enrichment class as a favorite part of their day, she said. He challenges them to think critically and solve problems. He also coaches the Science Olympiad Team and chairs the spelling bee.
